Healing Foods for the Body: Improving Health and Reducing Disease Risk

Medicines aren’t the only things that can improve your health, but so can your diet. Certain foods can help prevent certain conditions or even improve the symptoms of the disease. Here is a list of ideal healing foods for the body.

Healing foods for the body

Broccoli

One of the best things you can do to improve your health or reduce the symptoms of certain diseases is to eat more green vegetables. Broccoli is an excellent choice, being rich in bioactive compounds that kale, cauliflower or cabbage also contain.

Studies show that when you eat broccoli raw or lightly cooked, a few times a week, it reduces the risk of prostate, breast, skin or lung cancer. A research published in 2019 in Nutrition & Cancer suggests that consumption of raw cruciferous vegetables lowers the risk of stomach cancer.

Spinach

Spinach is a potent source of lutein and zeaxanthin, two carotenoids that studies published in Journal of the National Cancer Institute suggest that they significantly reduce the rate of breast cancers when consumed in abundance. Spinach contains folic acid, an essential B vitamin during pregnancy. A study published in PLoS One journal shows that a low level of folic acid increases the risk of breast cancer.

Beans

Unlike animal sources of protein, beans do not contain unhealthy fats. A study published in JAMA Internal Medicine shows that participants who ate legumes at least four times a week had a 22% reduced risk of developing heart disease compared to participants who ate them once a week.

Oat

Oat consumption can prevent and reverse type 2 diabetes due to its effect on blood sugar. Oats contain a type of soluble fiber called beta-glucan that supports metabolic health. In a study published in 2021 in Journal of Functional Foods showed that the group of participants with type 2 diabetes who consumed 5 grams of beta-glucan supplements once a day improved blood sugar levels, reduced appetite and felt more satisfied after 12 weeks. Improvements were also seen in the gut microbiota, which plays a critical role in metabolic health.

blueberries

Blueberries are anti-inflammatory because they contain a class of antioxidants called flavonoids and anthocyanins that can stop inflammation. A review of a research published in 2020 in Advances in Nutrition demonstrates that these delicious fruits are associated with anti-inflammatory action and have beneficial effects on vascular health, blood sugar and the flora of the gastrointestinal tract.
