Bittersweet day for Spanish tennis in the preliminary phase of the Australian Open. Aliona Bolsova and Cristina Bucsa got through to the second round on Monday after defeating Britain’s Heather Watson (7-6, 6-3) and Australia’s Kaylah McPhee (6-4, 6-0) respectively.
Worse luck happened to the rest of the representatives of the “Armada”. Pablo Andújar lost to Australian Adam Walton 6-1, 6-2while in the women’s draw Rosa Vicens failed to beat the German Eva Lys (6-3, 6-4) and Leyre Romero was overtaken by the Uzbek Nigina Abduraimova.
Of the rest of the day, the victory of the Andorran Vicky Jiménez against the Swede Rebecca Petterson (6-3, 6-4) should be noted and Eugenie Bouchard’s loss to American Ashlyn Krueger (6-3, 1-6, 6-4).
