game review In the hilarious ‘Headbangers: Rhythm Royale’ you compete as a pigeon against other pigeons in a lot of musical mini-games. These can be AI pigeons, but also other players or even your friends. Bring on that game night!
During four rounds of all kinds of randomly selected musical mini-games, your memory will be tested, but also your reaction speed, reflexes and of course your sense of rhythm. You can unlock extra bonuses, but be careful… sometimes those bonuses can also be disadvantageous. Sometimes, on the other hand, they are a handicap for your opponents. One of the mini-games is a kind of ‘Follow the boss’ and a handicap is that you temporarily can no longer see the boss, which of course makes it difficult to follow him.
If you do well, you can unlock a bonus round and that is actually the only round in which something resembling headbanging actually has to happen. In that sense, the name of the game may be a bit misleading.

Elimination race
Each round is in fact an elimination race in which the best continue. You start in round 1 with 30 pigeons/players. The 10 lowest scoring pigeons are eliminated. In the second round, only the 10 best of the 20 survivors are allowed to continue. That leaves us with 10, of which 5 will again lose weight. In the fourth and final round there are 5 pigeons left and the first to make a mistake is eliminated until only 1 pigeon remains and that is the winner.

Your pigeon gets crumbs as a reward. The number depends on your score throughout the different consecutive rounds. With those crumbs you can buy extras, such as a special outfit, a cool hat or a new mustache… You also earn experience points and thus increase your level every time. With each level you unlock new outfits and other extras and there are also rewards for specific achievements, so to speak.

Elvis pigeon
In one of the games, called ‘Guilty’, you have to choose which artist on stage produces the music you hear. We don’t always find it clear what exactly the outfits are supposed to represent. There is a Scotsman, a pigeon version of Elvis, an alien pigeon, etc… some of the other pigeons we did not immediately realize what exactly they represented.

Visually it could be a little better here and there. Throughout the game there are also all kinds of references to old platform games and fighting games. This occasionally provoked some nostalgic musings from us, which made us too distracted and cruelly pulled back into reality. Disqualified!

‘Headbangers: Rhythm Royale’ is ideal for an evening with friends. Be sure to bring a controller to the party, because although this game can also be played with a keyboard, a controller is still more convenient.

The makers playfully pose the age-old question “What on earth goes on in the head of a pigeon?” finally answer. Looking at the pigeons in our garden, I fear that they somewhat overestimate the qualities of these flying rats… but it is up to you to judge for yourself of course. In any case, we can’t wait to compete with the rest of the online pigeon population, because this hilarious and entertaining game goes live on October 31.
