This episode “Doctor explain to me” helps us understand when it is necessary to go to the ER after a classic “Hit on the head”. We talk about it with Giorgio Costantino, Head of the Emergency Department at the Milan Polyclinic and Associate Professor of Internal Medicine at the University of Milan.
The variables
The fundamental criteria to understand (even with minor trauma) if it is necessary to go to the emergency room are represented by feeling confused, slowed down, or if you experience memory problems, or nausea and vomiting. Other risk factors are age (very old people), any anticoagulant therapies in progress, or strong “blows” who may have deep wounds and the “aggregating” therapy (aspirinetta).
The consequences of head injury in rare cases can manifest themselves even days or weeks after the event, so you have to pay attention to what changes over time. The seat of the “botta” it is more important than the appearance or otherwise of the classic “bumps”.
