The Wild Animal Institute of the Baden-Württemberg Forest Research and Experimental Institute (FVA) in Freiburg develops scientific principles for the management and handling of selected animal species. It emerged in February 2021 from the FVA’s wildlife ecology department. It is now presenting itself to the public with a series of events for laypersons.
BZ: Why was the wildlife institute established?
Suchant: With more than 50 scientists in wildlife research, it was a logical step to set up a separate department within the FVA – the Wildlife Institute. The demands on our work have increased continuously. An important basis of our research is the systematic recording of wild animals and their habitat, which we call monitoring.
