The formally prescribed tendering procedure for the lavishly endowed civil servant post in Darmstadt is a farce. Because in the end, the political majority should decide who will be the new head of school and digitization. A comment.

The Darmstadt city councilors have a choice on Thursday: Should they elect a candidate for the new full-time city councilor who is inexperienced in local politics, who first had to be sought by the Volt party, which was elected to the city parliament, before a precisely fitting job advertisement was published, or should one be familiar with school issues and local politics Experienced Social Democrat to become a new city councilor and head of school?

The formally envisaged tendering procedure for this lavishly endowed political civil servant position with more than 8,700 euros – which corresponds to the salary of presidents of state offices – was a farce anyway, because ultimately the political majority is decisive, which, however, can enable office patronage. Anyone who, like the Darmstadt FDP chairman Leif Blum, is of the opinion that personal government formation is “just like that everywhere”, surrenders to a development worthy of criticism.

It is good that the SPD is sending Tanja Pfenning, the managing director of the state parents’ council, a prominent education politician into the race. The start-up founder, podcaster and IT expert Holger Klötzner, favored by the Greens, CDU and Volt, has yet to prove his expertise in education policy.
