Head of COVID ICU: Out of 10 patients, only 1 survives – 2024-04-14 03:31:13

/ world today news/ The head of the COVID intensive care unit at the “Medica-Ruse” UMBAL, Dr. Milen Shopov, showed on Nova TV the situation in his department. He said that only one resuscitation bed is free, 46 are occupied. None of them have been vaccinated. The doctor also revealed a startling statistic – out of 10 people, only 1 patient is discharged healthy.

“I want to clarify that intubation does not kill them. They have reached such a severe respiratory failure that they have to be intubated in order to prolong their lives and eventually be cured”, explained Dr. Shopov.

“There are a hell of a lot of people who went through intensive care, but only two were vaccinated. And one of them did not have a document, but claimed to have been vaccinated in Germany. Unfortunately, he died,” revealed the head of the COVID intensive care unit. The other patient, who was proven to have been vaccinated, had a number of co-morbidities but recovered, the doctor added. And he urged people to get vaccinated.

He showed what two intensive care beds look like and how patients are monitored.

“Patients are medically sedated, these devices, depending on their respiratory failure, can completely replace lung function or partially replace it if the patient has preserved some spontaneous breathing. Unfortunately, the two patients next to me are on 100% oxygen breathing, which means they have almost no healthy lung tissue left. Usually patients come in with a saturation around 90-92, which with a little oxygen we can improve. Subsequently, within a day or two, a maximum of three, there is a sharp deterioration in lung function,” said Dr. Shopov.

“If two patients come in with a similar condition, we accept the one who came first. I have no idea if there are beds in the other hospitals in Ruse”, added Dr. Shopov.

The head of the COVID resuscitation assured that there is oxygen in the hospital. The problem is the lack of staff. Dr. Shopov and his colleagues work 12-hour shifts, and one doctor and two nurses care for 14 patients.
