Head of Civil Defense Provides Update on Heavy Rains in Mar del Plata

Rodrigo Gonçalvez, head of Civil Defense in Mar del Plata, spoke with Nicolás Galante in Buena Semana, a program of Brisas Radioand offered a balance after the day of heavy rains that affected the city yesterday. According to his statements, the amount of millimeters varied significantly according to the area, with notable differences between the south, west, and north sectors. “During the morning and noon it was a very intense rain, but it varied depending on the sector”said the official.

Gonçalvez highlighted that, in general, the accumulated rainfall was significant, which caused difficulties in the rainfall system. However, as the intensity of the rain decreased, the system began to normalize, although in some sectors it took longer to evacuate the water.

In this sense, the head of Civil Defense expressed: “In general terms there was not such an important demand from the neighborsof course there were specific cases in the hour of intense rain where the drainage of water was not sufficient due to the garbage, the leaves, the remains of the pruning. This caused the water to drain late ”, she assured.

The official emphasized the importance of the preventive work carried out by Civil Defense, in collaboration with Obras Sanitarias, to clean canals and stormwater, with the aim of reducing the impacts of flooding.

He also highlighted the importance of citizen collaboration in garbage cleanup, which helps to avoid emergency situations: “We do not transfer the responsibility to the neighbor, the responsibility belongs to the Statebut the collaboration of all when we talk about garbage is undoubtedly an important and substantial support so as not to have to go out to mitigate these eventualities, when these garbage caps are generated, it is a joint effort between all of us”, he pointed out.

The head of Civil Defense acknowledged that, in the face of heavy rains like those that occurred two weeks ago, some neighborhoods face flooding problems due to their location in areas of watercourses or lower levels, such as La Herradura, Parque Palermo or the 2 de Abril neighborhood. Although cleanup work can be done to improve drainage, in some cases it is difficult to completely prevent flooding.

“Yesterday we went out with crews to uncover some sewers that are clogged, they vary according to the scenario. Preventive work is done constantly, with the cleaning of many channels and stormwater channels.”said the official.

Regarding the rainfall records, Gonçalvez pointed out that the values can vary considerably in different parts of the city and that sometimes the reports of the National Meteorological Service may not accurately reflect the situation in each place. Consequently, the repercussions of the rains speak more than the exact number of millimeters fallen.

For his part, Gonçalvez remarked that they continue to evaluate preventive and mitigation measures to face future climatic contingencies.
