Head of CEC: mistakes made in Jelgava and Sigulda polling stations, the situation in Salaspils has yet to be clarified

During the counting of votes in local government elections, 11 ballot envelopes without the stamp of the polling station were found in the ballot boxes in the 203rd polling station in Jelgava, but in the 783rd polling station in Sigulda region, Central Election Commissions (CVK) manager Kristīne Bērziņa. The polling station commissions have admitted the mistakes made.

In turn, during the counting of votes in the 767th polling station of Salaspils region, it was established that the number of valid ballot papers exceeds the number of valid ballot envelopes by three marks, which may contain only one valid ballot paper. As Bērziņa pointed out, the polling station commission is currently unable to explain how these three redundant ballot papers came into being.

The head of CVK indicated that the situation was likely to become clearer on Monday. The State Security Service also has information about what happened, which will also check it.

Bērziņa expressed two theoretical versions of how the error was made. It is possible that during the counting of votes one of the members of the commission opened an envelope with more than one sign. Bērziņa emphasized that if the marks have a different content, they are all invalid, but one of the members of the commission may have missed it and added these marks to the total number of valid marks.

According to Bērziņa, the second possibility could be that someone added these three signs during the counting of votes, but, as the head of CVK emphasized, all the mentioned possibilities are only versions of what happened, because currently no official explanation has been received from the commission.

“In Salaspils, something has happened to open the envelopes, which is one of the stages during the counting of votes. Because the votes are counted sequentially in steps, errors can occur at each stage, but when filling out the protocol, they become visible. That is why the counting is so long, “The protocol must be filled in correctly to make sure that all the numbers match. Control in Salaspils about the number of valid envelopes with valid characters is not fulfilled and there are three more valid characters,” explained Bērziņa.
