Head of astronomical research: Today’s earthquake was followed by 15 aftershocks… which is why he was not warned

Dr Jad Al-Qadi, head of the National Institute for Astronomical Research, said the gulfs of Aqaba and Suez are among the areas witnessing seismic activity at a daily rate, but recorded tremors are not felt.

Al-Qadi added in a telephone interview on the “Cairo Talk” program with media outlet Karima Awad on the Cairo and Al-Nas channel on Tuesday evening that the earthquake in the Al-Tur region is not a new matter. in this region, and was repeated several times in previous years, indicating that the earthquake was strong, 5 on the Richter scale.

He continued: The earthquake was followed by a number of 15 aftershocks, indicating that these aftershocks were not felt by anyone due to the absence of tall buildings, elevations or population centers, and the intensity of these aftershocks of settling ranged between 2 and 3.5 degrees on the Richter scale.

Today, Tuesday, corresponding to 12/27/2022, the stations of the National Seismological Network recorded an earthquake, 26 kilometers southwest of Al-Tur.

The National Institute for Astronomical Research has revealed that the earthquake occurred at: 02:11:02 local time, with a magnitude of 5 on the Richter scale, at latitude: 28.04 N, longitude: 33.48 E, and depth: 9.61 km.

The National Institute for Astronomical Research said the institute received information indicating the tremor was felt and no loss of life or property was reported.
