This season, the team failed to qualify for the NHL playoffs for the first time since 2014.
TASS, 15 April. American Peter Laviolette has stepped down as head coach of the National Hockey League (NHL) Washington. This was announced on Saturday by the press service of the team.
“We are grateful to Peter for his leadership and dedication to our club over the last three seasons. Peter is a top notch person who represented our club with integrity and led our team through many difficult circumstances during his tenure as head coach. We wish him all the best for the future,” said general manager Brian McLellan.
Laviolette took charge of the Washingtons in September 2020. This NHL season, the team took sixth place in the standings of the Capital Division and failed to reach the playoffs for the first time since 2014.
In the course of his career, the specialist led the New York Islanders, Philadelphia, Nashville and Carolina, with which he won the Stanley Cup in the 2005/06 season. Under his leadership, Nashville reached the Stanley Cup Final in 2017, where they lost to Pittsburgh.
