As a tennis professional, he was part of Sweden’s golden generation; as a coach, he led Roger Federer to his first Wimbledon victory: Peter Lundgren has died at the age of just 59. According to media reports, Lundgren suffered from diabetes.

He helped the legendary Roger Federer to his first Grand Slam title: The former Swedish ATP professional and tennis coach Peter Lundgren has died at the age of just 59. The Swedish Tennis Association announced this in a post on Instagram, confirming media reports and information from Lundgren’s children Lukas and Julia on Facebook.

In the 1980s, Lundgren was overshadowed by his famous compatriots such as Mats Wilander and Stefan Edberg, but he still reached number 25 in the world rankings in 1987 and won three ATP tournaments. In the finals of Stockholm 1988 and Indianapolis 1990, Lundgren lost to Boris Becker. In doubles, he made it to the final of the 1988 Australian Open with Jeremy Bates.

But Lundgren became known above all as a somewhat eccentric coach. He worked with players such as Marcelo Rios, Marat Safin, Stan Wawrinka, Grigor Dimitrov and Marcos Baghdatis and helped the then 22-year-old Federer to his first Wimbledon title in 2003.

“Peter Lundgren was a wonderful person with a big heart and a lot of humor,” Swedish tennis star Björn Borg told “Sportbladet.” He was also “a really good friend,” said Borg. “He was loved by everyone. The tennis world will miss him.” “Aftonbladet” reported that Lundgren suffered from diabetes. Last year, he had to have one of his feet amputated due to an infection. “Rest in peace, Dad,” wrote Lukas Lundgren on Facebook. “One of the best has unfortunately left us far too early.”
