With balloons, candles and emotional messages, teammates and friends of Ommat Cruz paid tribute to him in a vigil held on the soccer field where he played at the Susan Wagner School in Staten Island.
This Wednesday, during the vigil, his companions remembered Ommatt, 19, whom affectionately nicknamed “The Dog” for his intensity when playing football.
“First I felt like a shock, because I didn’t believe he was no longer here, He was someone who was always dancing bachata in Spanish,” said his friend Derek Poverde.
His best friend, Kiwoni Fierroz, recalled that the boy of Dominican origin had two great passions: cars and construction.
“He always made sure everyone was okay before him, he loved cars and construction”he recalled.
“ He was a wonderful manwith an emotional spirit and always trying to ensure that we were all positive,” commented another of his colleagues, Christian Kiste.
Omatt’s mother attended the vigil who was visibly moved by the words towards her son.
Attendees placed candles and released white balloons during the vigil.
