Iranian media reported that the gunman who killed 15 people at a Shia shrine in southern Iran earlier this week died of his injuries on Saturday, according to the Associated Press.
The bloody attack took place on Wednesday at Shah Garg in Shiraz, the second holiest Shiite shrine in Iran.
ISIS claimed responsibility for the attack, but the Iranian government has tried to blame the attack on protests that are sweeping the country.
Iranian authorities have not disclosed details about the attacker, who died in a hospital in the southern city of Shiraz from injuries sustained during his arrest, according to Iranian semi-official news agencies “Fars” and “Tasnim”.
Officials said a funeral for the victims would take place later in the day.
It is normal for the authorities not to reveal the gunman’s nationality or provide details about him.
The attack came at a time when the country was rocked by the riots that erupted after the murder of Mahsa Amini on September 16.
Iranian officials accused the protesters of paving the way for the attack on the Shiraz shrine, but there is no evidence linking extremist groups to the large-scale peaceful demonstrations that are sweeping the country.
ISIS announced the attack on the shrine, the first such announcement in Iran in four years.
