Six pieces of a double pack of toothpastes for 159 crowns will cost a man behind bars for two years. The court of appeal ruled on this on Thursday.
He had already stayed in the cold during the theft. This was also taken into account by the judge on Thursday, who confirmed the June verdict of the Municipal Court in Brno.
According to the reasoning of the decision, a two-year sentence for banal theft at the lower limit of the penalty rate is adequate. According to the court, during the state of emergency, it was sufficiently emphasized that crimes are much more strictly qualified.
“Unfortunately, I can’t comment on this matter, because I don’t have permission from our client,” said the man’s lawyer, Martin Malý.
Thefts during the state of emergency did not pay off for the 25-year-old homeless man from Brno. At the beginning of July, he received a hard two years from the Brno City Court for stealing five buns worth 62 crowns and 50 pennies. The regional court later commuted the verdict to 1.5 years behind bars.
