English footballer Ivan Toney from Brentford became the target of racist insults after he scored a questionable equalizing goal in Saturday’s match of the 23rd round of the Premier League at the ground of the leader Arsenal London (1:1).

Toney, who is dark-skinned, faced racist attacks on social media, according to AFP. “Immediately after the match, he received a number of offensive and racist messages via his Instagram account. We are disgusted and saddened that Ivan had to face this again.” Brentford management said in a club statement.

Arsenal immediately offered the 26-year-old their support and said they were working with Brentford to identify those involved.

The Premier League’s refereeing body (PGMOL) admitted on Sunday that Brentford’s equalizer at the league leaders’ ground was not properly reviewed by the video referees.

Toney’s header was followed by a lengthy VAR review, with the video system examining whether Ethan Pinnock was offside and whether he had intervened before the goal. However, the referees in charge of VAR overlooked the fact that Christian Norgaard was in an offside position when he sent the ball to Toney, who equalised.

PGMOL boss Howard Webb contacted Arsenal and Brighton officials on Sunday and told them there had been “significant misconduct in the VAR process”.
