The management of the Italian football club Lazio Rome on Wednesday suspended the coach of the club mascot – the eagle Olympia.
The reason for this step was that after the weekend league match against Inter Milan (3: 1), Juan Bernabé presented himself publicly with fascist greetings and verbal support from former fascist dictator Benito Mussolini.
The video, in which Bernabé held a club eagle in front of Lazio’s fans in his left hand, lifted his upright right hand up and shouted “Duce, Duce”, became viral in Italy. Duce was the nickname of the mentioned Mussolini.
“As soon as we learned of the existence of a video that accuses Juan Bernabé (not a Lazio employee but an external company employee) of abusive behavior towards the club, fans and values we share, we had to react immediately. We asked the external company to suspension of that person and it is possible that the contract will be terminated, “ stated in the opinion of the Lazio Club of Rome.
Supporters of this Roman club have a “rich” past associated with racist and fascist expressions. Lazia’s management has been working for a long time to solve this problem. The club also informed on Wednesday that last week it sent a letter to all its suppliers warning them of compliance with ethical rules.
