(ANSA) – TEMPIO PAUSANIA, 10 APR – Seven years of imprisonment plus the confiscation of personal assets: this is the sentence that today the judges of the Tempio Pausania court inflicted on Elena Altobelli, 56 years old, from Cagliari, former director of the post office of Luogosanto, in Gallura, accused of embezzlement, embezzlement and fraud for having pocketed the savings of dozens of customers, many of whom were pensioners, through a system she set up herself which involved the non-renewal of postal savings bonds . The investigation that led to the accused’s house arrest began in the summer of 2016 when a family with an account opened in the Luogosanto office showed up at the counter to withdraw a large sum of money. And here was the bitter discovery: there were only a few pennies in the account, thousands of euros had evaporated. Hence the first report to the police, which was followed by dozens of reports from people who, unaware of the illicit operations of the then director, found themselves without money in their accounts. The investigations also involved the Financial Police. Elena Altobelli, according to what was reconstructed by the investigators, would have come into possession of around one million euros in a period of time ranging from 2002 to 2016, when she was removed from her position as an official. The unfaithful former manager used her relationship of knowledge and confidence with post office customers to transfer money from one account to another, without the knowledge of the account holders, thus creating large shortfalls. “We must read the provisions and the reasons and then we will make our assessments”, is the comment of the defense lawyer Massimo Puddu, of the Cagliari bar, immediately after the conviction.
