ANNOUNCEMENTS

Women employees of humanitarian non-governmental organizations (NGOs) are no longer allowed to work by the Taliban in Afghanistan. This was ordered by the Ministry of Economy of the country’s extremist rulers. The measure is another reduction in women’s rights in Afghanistan.

According to a director, the measure was introduced because some female employees were not complying with the extremely strict dress code. This concerns both domestic and foreign NGOs. It is unclear whether the measure also applies to women working for the United Nations in Afghanistan.

The measure, in force until further notice, comes within days of the Taliban suspended higher education for female students. This decision has led to fierce criticism both inside and outside Afghanistan. The United States, Turkey and Qatar, among others, have condemned the move.

Demonstrations for the ban on education

Today, women took to the streets in several major cities to demonstrate. In Herat, the country’s second largest city, among others, women flocked to the governor’s official residence. Among other things, they chanted the slogan “education is our right”. According to the organization, there were 100 to 150 women standing.

The security services tried to push the protesters back with a water cannon. A spokesperson for the governor said only four or five women were at the protest.

In August last year, the Taliban regained power in Afghanistan after the withdrawal of the last US troops. The group then promised not to limit women’s rights, but that promise fell short. Girls can no longer go to school and women can no longer practice all kinds of professions.
