San Francisco del Rincón – Before talking about Ramón, his mother Elia takes a deep breath and says that his memory will make him cry. Her 28-year-old son became a hero who, when he died in an accident, donated all his organs, helping more than 250 people. The passionate athlete will always be remembered in San Pancho.
“It’s something nice for one of us because we know that he (Ramón) lives in other people, maybe that’s why I feel like he left me because I don’t see him physically, I see all his photos and I want to talk to him, I want to tell him many things. But I also know that he lives in other people and that he is still here a little bit, even in other people’s bodies, “Elia Margarita González, 55, Ramón’s mother, tells La Silla Rota.

–They called Ramón ´Mon´ or ´Monchis´, but his full name is Ramón de Jesús Hernández González. The boy grew up in the downtown area of San Pancho (a municipality with more than 130 thousand inhabitants). Since he was a child he was a sports fan, at the end of high school he obtained a degree in Sports Education that allowed him to be a crossfit and swimming coach. He was also a Physical Education teacher at a preparatory school. He went to America and loved soccer.
A motorcycle accident took his life in ten days. Ramón left an aunt’s house on his way home on April 11. Before that visit he had lunch with his mother and grandmother, it was a common day. Suddenly, Elia – his mother – is visited by a traffic and warns her that her son hit a pole. In seconds, she got on the patrol car and they reached Federico Medrano Street, but Ramón was gone, “the ambulance took him away,” the traffic told Doña Elia.
“He hit a post, it was there because of Federico Medrano, he hit himself, I don’t know if he blinked (fell asleep), fainted. Something happened to my son that made him go straight to the post, as if was that his way. “

The multiple fractures put Ramón on the bed of a private hospital and then a public one. Doctors made an attempt to save him and his loved ones as well. To pay for the expenses, relatives, friends, acquaintances and residents of San Pancho organized bazaars and tombolas with a single cause: to help Ramón.
“The people who supported us financially, with their prayers, with their blessings. I know that my son is grateful for everything and the whole family is grateful for everything (…) he was very loved by his students, by his schoolmates.”

Days passed and the family did not take their finger off the line, they waited for Ramón to return home. However, on April 21, the doctors at the public hospital to which he had been transferred informed him of his death.
When her mother received the news, she remembered Ramón’s will. That family talk in which the young man confessed that if he died, he would like to donate his organs to save lives. His will was carried out.
“It feels ugly that they take something away from your son even when he is gone, but I know I did well because he will live in other people (…) Only with skeletal muscle more than 250 people were saved, plus the organs (…) is a satisfaction in part “.

Ramón’s body came out on a hospital gurney four days before his birthday – April 25th. Everyone applauded him: doctors, orderlies, nurses and family members. The young man who had taken a diploma in Therapy and Rehabilitation, in Celaya, had become a donor.
“I thank my son for the 28 years that I had him by my side,” says his mother on the call.
Ramón was the fifth child in the family. Before his birth, Mrs. Elia had complications and lost other babies. “He was my fifth pregnancy, there is no bad fifth,” his mother said.
Elia advises people who have suffered an accident to “be grateful for the second chance that my son did not have.” He assures that the decision to donate organs is made by people in solidarity, like Ramón. Calls to raise awareness and help to save lives.
