He learned to create a role out of nothing. In memory of Leon Krivan

Leons Krivāns has just been taken to eternity, but the actor ‘s accomplishment remains – both in fixed testimonials on film, video, photographs, and in the audience’ s memories. In a conversation with Silvia Geikin, he once admitted that he was a character who did not give up playing heroes. Or the directors just didn’t give up. However, an old story tells that Krivan was in the eyes of the directors an actor who could make a role out of nothing. He learned to amuse, and no doubt it was the comic, somewhat self-righteous, but in the deepest sense kind-hearted characters that allowed him to earn such a lasting place in people’s memories, despite the lack of the aforementioned heroic roles in the creative biography. Leon Krivan was not always satisfied with the comic role tag he tried to put on, so he also looked for ways to prove himself professionally.
So how did Leon Krivan’s career as an actor begin? As he himself mentioned in an interview, he had no idea about the stage in his youth. “I worked with my father in the repair office of the Ministry of Culture. After working with friends, we met in “construction” (Construction Workers’ Culture House). There, under the direction of Robert Liger, we staged serious jokes – we reproduced the drawings of the Danish cartoonist Bidstrup in live pictures, ”the actor himself says in an interview. Suddenly, the fun band reached the news that there would be an admission to the third acting studio of the Daile Theater. At that time, Krivāns simply obeyed the herd’s instinct and went to join together with his “build” members – Juris Strengs, Ilze and Uldis Vazdiks. Eduards Smiļģis had figured out that the young actors would work during the day, but would study in the evenings. The third studio of the Daile Theater has already become legendary, together with Leon Leivan it was completed by such popular and highly regarded actors as Helga Dancbergs, Olga Dreģe, Astrīda Kairiša, Ārijs Geikins, Lidija Pupure, Anda Zaice and others.
