He has had a facial reconstruction. The cyclist wants to get back on the bike after the horror fall

Dutch cyclist Fabio Jakobsen hopes to be able to ride his bike for the first time this month since the threatening accident at the August Around Poland race. Doctors removed the stitches after the last operation to a member of the Deceuninck-QuickStep team who crashed into a barrier in a high-speed mass spurt and suffered multiple fractures of his face.

A month ago, Jakobsen underwent a facial reconstruction in which doctors removed a piece of bone from his pelvis to use it to strengthen a broken jaw. The operation appears to have been successful.

“Four weeks after the reconstruction of the upper and lower jaw, the time has come to remove the stitches. The healing process is progressing well,” Jakobsen, 24, said on social media. “The transplanted bone must now be strengthened and strengthened in the coming months. Another operation is scheduled for 2021,” he added.

When the bone is stable, Jakobsen will go for another procedure. Doctors insert implants in his jaw so that he can get new teeth. He lost all but one of his teeth in the accident, with 130 stitches on his face.

In the meantime, he could ride his bike again, although it is uncertain whether he will return to professional cycling after an accident in which he almost lost his life. “In a few weeks, I could have a pelvis as strong as before. And since then, I could slowly start training on the bike again!” wrote Jakobsen.

Last year’s Dutch champion, his compatriot Dylan Groenewegen pushed the barrier into Poland on August 5. A member of the Jumbo-Visma team has since ceased operations and the International Cycling Union is conducting disciplinary proceedings against him.
