Ukrainian authorities believe there is a greater risk of Russia launching a new offensive against the northern part of the country from Belarusian territory.
The background is that both Belarus and Russia have made increasingly hostile statements and that the two countries have deployed a joint force on the border with Ukraine.
– The aggressive rhetoric of the political-military leadership in Russia and Belarus intensifies. The danger of the Russian armed forces launching a new offensive at the Northern Front is increasing, Ukrainian Deputy Chief of Staff Oleksiy Gromov said at a press conference on Thursday.
The concern comes just two days after the Belarusian Defense Ministry announced that 9,000 Russian soldiers and about 170 tanks would be deployed in Belarus.
– Russian soldiers, together with Belarusian forces, will form a joint force that will defend Belarusian borders, says a ministry announcement.
The country’s authorities say the force “will be for defense only and aims to protect borders”.
