Tesla is certainly one of the most advanced automakers globally in the development of technology autonomous driving. This does not mean that the system developed by the Palo Alto brand has already reached the pinnacle of safety: it is no coincidence that the driver is obliged to always pay attention, so as to be able to intervene if necessary. Something that the owner of a Tesla Model 3 in the United States could not have done after being surprised asleep driving his electric set in autonomous driving mode.
The Tesla Model 3 in question was traveling on a one-way highway constant speed of 130 km / h. The police, warned of what was happening through a phone call, immediately set off in pursuit of the electric car of the Palo Alto house, effectively surprising the driver asleep at the wheel. A race that lasted over 3 kilometers, during which the siren of the police car also changed the intensity of the sound so as to warn the driver, for the first few moments in vain. The driver of the Tesla Model 3 in question, once awake, has approached, reiterating to the police officer several times that he had never actually fallen asleep and citing the fact that the Autopilot system periodically requires drivers to get their hands on the wheel.
The justification of the 38-year-old was not considered sufficient by the police, considering that it is not the first time this has happened: already two more times the police had received a report of a man apparently asleep driving the Tesla Model 3 with the same license plate as this one. That’s why this time the penalty was triggered: in total, the driver had to pay a fine of 187 dollars for careless driving. Since the man was found to be unable to drive again, the police decided to move the Tesla Model 3 in question via a wrecker.
