Former Serbian football player Nemanja Vidic withdrew his candidacy for the post of president of the Serbian Football Federation on Monday. The only candidate left was former player and official of Crvena Zvezda Belgrade Dragan Džajic, who is close to the current populist government.
The Serbian Football Federation often faces accusations of corruption, crime and political influence. Vidič faced a massive campaign against his candidacy.
“Our football faces great challenges. Many things must and can be improved. My idea was to assemble a team of top experts who are able to solve these challenges. Unfortunately, at every step on the way to the post of president of the federation, it was clear to me that we would not get a chance.” said the forty-one-year-old long-time defender of Manchester United.
