(ANSA) – CAGLIARI, JULY 31 – He paid workers 5 euros an hour to employ them on his land for 8 to 10 hours a day, without providing them with food, water or adequate accommodation in which to work. This was discovered by investigators from the Widespread Crime Section of the Cagliari Flying Squad who arrested a 39-year-old for labor exploitation of at least five asylum-seeking migrants hosted at the temporary reception center in Monastir, about twenty kilometers from the Sardinian capital. The man, from Cagliari, owner of a farm in Monastir, in the Cagliari area, was subjected to the measure of having to sign in after the arrest was validated. The lightning investigation into gangmastering conducted by the Flying Squad in collaboration with the staff of the Labor Inspectorate of Cagliari and Oristano began a few days ago following a report received by the inspectorate on alleged irregular hiring, without contributions and without reporting wages, carried out by the owner of the agricultural company in Monastir. Police investigations were then launched, which in addition to stakeouts in the area also collected testimonies from migrants. The conditions of exploitation thus emerged: “Daily employment of 8/10 hours with a short break for lunch that the worker brought independently, as well as water for drinking – the police explain – lack of personal protective equipment and adequate rooms for breaks; wages clearly different from collective agreements at a national level and in any case disproportionate to the quantity and quality of the work performed (low pay in the envelope and remuneration of the remaining entitlements at 5 euros per hour and under the table)”. On July 26, the blitz in the farm was triggered and five migrants were discovered working in the fields, including the 39-year-old who was arrested. (ANSA).
