A man from Michigan (United States) is accused of having misappropriated nearly 14,000 textbooks by scamming Amazon. He was operating with three other accomplices, according to information from The Register relayed by Capital.
The damage from this scam is estimated at over $ 1.5 million. The crooks rented textbooks through the “Amazon Rental” program under different identities. They used Amazon gift cards to rent and paid with “Visa MyVanilla” cards to prove that they had enough to reimburse Amazon if the books were not returned.
Up to thirty-nine years in prison
However, these non-nominative payment cards had no balance. The e-commerce giant has never been able to repay itself on the 14,000 textbooks stolen. In addition, the crooks would call customer service to report that they had not received their packages. They were then immediately reimbursed to their bank account.
The deception lasted nearly five years, says Capital. For this well-crafted scam, the main suspect and his accomplices face up to 39 years in prison: 20 years for mail fraud, 10 years for receiving stolen goods, five years for lying to the FBI and finally four years for identity theft. .
