What was probably intended as a joke on Monday night created complete confusion about Mike Pence’s presidential bid.
Papers filed with the Federal Election Commission suggests Mike Pence will run for president in 2024.
It became known late Monday evening Norwegian time.
But minutes later, Pence’s spokesman denies everything, saying someone else turned over the documents in the former vice president’s name.
The spokesperson says someone probably did it as a joke, according to New York Times reporter Maggie Haberman, who has worked closely with President Donald Trump for several years.
Trump is the only one who has so far publicly declared that he intends to run. It has long been speculated that Mike Pence may run as a counter candidate to become the Republican nominee in 2024, but so far it’s not official despite documents that appeared Monday.
Mike Pence served as vice president, under Donald Trump, from 2017 to 2021.
Donald Trump lost the election to Joe Biden in fall 2020, and thus only got one term as US president. He can therefore reapply in 2024, being able to hold two terms as president of the country.
