He cuts his hand, the hospital re-implants it in stride

Lumberjack in his spare time, Bernard Faure probably thought he had lost his hand for good when, last December, a careless error near a log splitter severed his forearm from the wrist. However, well helped by his relatives who take care to call emergency services quickly and place the severed limb in a bag in the freezer, the sixty-year-old can once again move all his fingers. And this, thanks to a specialized team from a Beaumont hospital where he was taken.

There, in the suburbs of Clermont-Ferrand, the surgeon Jean-David Stussi takes care of this “unusual patient” whose “hand arrived at the block before him”, can we read on the site of “Parisien” .

“The most important thing for the survival of the limb is revascularization, you have to rebuild the arteries and the veins. It is a very delicate operation that rarely works completely, it must be recognized, explains the surgeon. But Bernard amazes me. He already moves his fingers a little a few weeks after going to the block. This is exceptional ! »

Exceptional – the last time that the clinic of La Châtaigneraie reimplanted a hand, it was about twenty years ago -, the medical prowess from which Bernard Faure benefited must still be confirmed in the next six months, at least. This does not worry the main interested party: “Thanks to the intervention, I tell myself that I escape the implantation of a prosthesis. I’d rather keep my hand, even if it doesn’t work like it used to, than have to put up with a foreign body for the rest of my life. »
