Zbigniew Boniek was a guest of the “Gol” magazine on TVP Sport. The president of the Polish Football Association frankly admitted why he agreed to Czesław Michniewicz to take the position of the coach of Legia Warsaw before the key qualifying matches for the European Youth Championships.
Due to the poor disposition of the current Polish champions at the beginning of the season, Aleksandar Vuković lost his job in the capital. Dariusz Mioduski decided to hire Czesław Michniewicz, who until recently was the coach of the Polish U-21 national team.
The president of the Polish Football Association in the “Gol” magazine revealed why he allowed the coach to make such a move. Contrary to popular belief, he doesn’t have much to say himself.
– On Sunday at 12:00 I get a phone call from Mr. Mioduski, who says: “Zbyszek, I need your permission to talk to coach Michniewicz, because I want to hire him”. I replied: “Don’t worry, you played with Górnik yesterday evening and you want to hire a coach? And Michniewicz is interested in this? ”. He replied that he would, but without my consent there would be no talks – says Boniek.
– Someone put yourself in my shoes. What was I supposed to say? “Listen, won’t you go to Legia?” I told him to decide for himself, but there were two weeks to the matches against Bulgaria and Serbia, he has already appointed the squad. I wanted him to lead the team at least in these two games – added.
– I was supposed to say “Czesiu, you are not going anywhere, you are staying in the U-21”? He could blame me all his life, especially since when it comes to financial issues, Legia offered four or five times as much. Now it’s easy to say that we made a mistake – finished.
Legia led by Michniewicz failed to advance to the group stage of the Europa League. Until recently, the team led by the coach has only illusory chances of being promoted to the youth European championship. In the last match of the qualifying round, Maciej Stolarczyk will lead the team.
