The short film “Hé chabine” by director Sarah Démonio has been selected and will be broadcast during the Chelsea Film Festival, in New York, this Sunday, October 15.
Guadeloupean cinema is doing well. More and more projects are emerging in the archipelago. But these films, short, long, documentaries export well. In 2022, Nelson Foix’s film “Timoun aw” was selected at the Cannes Film Festival.
This year, it is in New York that the work of a young 34-year-old Guadeloupean director is making waves. She is not unknown. Already in 2019, she won the Prize for best short film Antilles-Guyane, for her film, “Deflesh et de regard”, at the CinéMartinique festival.
With her short film “Hé chabine” produced by Zayanfim, Sarah Démonio continues on a good path. In April 2022, she received the audience prize during the Nouveaux regards Festival.
The 12-minute film is being screened this weekend in New York as part of the 11th edition of the Chelsea Film Festival, which promotes cultural diversity in the industry.
It was founded in 2013 by Ingrid Jean-Baptiste and her mother Sonia, from Martinique, who wanted, through this festival, to give pride of place to independent cinema. It allows us to highlight other stories, far from stereotypes.
Ten French films will be presented this year. Among the selected, the third short film by the Guadeloupean director and screenwriter. Sarah Démonio has made the condition of women her hobby horse. “Hé chabine” renamed for the occasion in English “Hey shawty” is further proof of this.
It tells the story of Mélie, a shy fourteen-year-old teenager, very impatient and anxious to go on her first date to the cinema. Impatient because it’s the first time she’s dressed up to go out with a boy, anxious because she doesn’t want her big brother to know.
Mélie who will be confronted with the looks of words, with their words. “What woman has not, at least once, felt less than nothing, considered as flesh, in the words of a man she does not know?“, explained the director to the Karibinfo site.

The feature film “Les mules invisibles” by Martinican producer and director Christophe Agelan, which deals with drug trafficking and drug smugglers, is also part of the selection.
