Roberto Saviano was indicted by the gup of Rome on charges of defamation against the leader of the Brothers of Italy, Giorgia Meloni. Saviano during an episode of ‘Piazzapulita’ on La7 in December 2020 on the theme of migrants referred to Meloni as a “bastard”. The GUP has set the first hearing of the trial for November 15, 2022.
“Saviano pointed his finger in my face saying ‘I won’t give up, I won’t give up’. I don’t think this is a behavior appropriate to a courtroom and in many years as a lawyer it has never happened to me”, says the Honorable Andrea Delmastro delle Vedove, lawyer of Meloni, after the writer’s indictment. “The GUP defined the epithet ‘bastard’ exorbitant with respect to the right of political criticism – he explains – while Saviano claimed his words in the courtroom”.
