Kareem Flake was accused of beating his wife Destini Smothers to death in Queens, after being arrested in Florida and extradited to New York.

Flake, 30, was arrested on April 9 in the south of the country and extradited to New York on Tuesday to face charges as a suspect in the brutal crime. Smothers, the mother of two children with the now accused, died at the age of 26 in November 2020, but her body was not identified until four months later, in March 2021.

According to Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz, the victim was last seen alive in Flake’s car after leaving a bowling alley on November 3, 2020, when they were celebrating Smothers’s birthday. The two then apparently had a “heated argument”.

His decomposing remains were found four months later in the trunk of the abandoned vehicle. no license plates on Lefferts Boulevard near 150th Avenue, in South Ozone Park. Workers from the Department of Sanitation (DSNY) made the shocking discovery after opening the car they were towing, the police said.

Smothers lived in Troy (NY), near Albany. He suffered a skull fracture and brain injury from blunt impact, and his death was ruled a homicide. Relative Tima Fowler told Pix11 Since last year he believed that Flake was involved. “The car disappeared, she disappeared. That points to him.”

Flake was arrested in April in Kissimmee, Florida, on domestic battery charges against another woman. He now he was accused homicide and kidnapping and faces up to 25 years to life in prison if convicted. It is not clear the official motive for the crime or if the couple had a history of violence.

“On the run for over a year, this defendant is now in custody for the brutal murder of his partner, who was also the mother of his two young children,” said District Attorney Katz. “This is the worst possible outcome for any individual experiencing partner violence, and we express our condolences to the family of the victim.”
