Outside of that, he also enjoyed an extremely successful career in both billiards and snooker. A statement from the WST and WPSBA following his death hailed him as an “outstanding snooker and billiards player”.
Great career in billiards and snooker
The Englishman, born in 1936, drew attention to himself with his talent in his youth. In 1951 he won the British U16 billiards championship, as well as the British U19 title in 1952 and 1953.

Before he made his breakthrough in the senior class by winning the World Billiards Championship in 1984, he became English amateur billiards champion in 1968.
He also excelled in snooker. After numerous titles in junior tournaments, he began competing as a professional in 1979 and, among other things, reached the round of 16 of the UK Championship.

He ended his career in 1991, but remained loyal to the sport: In the 1980s and 1990s he demonstrated his second great talent: as a TV commentator on snooker, he gained a large fan base.
Former world champion Ken Doherty said of Wildman’s death: “I remember listening to Mark commentating as a child, he had a wonderful voice, he was so eloquent and his delivery was always perfect. He had a great love for snooker and billiards and knew the games inside and out. He was involved in all areas of sport, including as a coach. We will miss him dearly.”
