HD Hyundai Heavy Industries has begun full-scale steps to win orders for the Canadian submarine project.

HD Hyundai Heavy Industries announced that it participated in the ‘Deep Blue Forum’ held in Ottawa, Canada on the 14th (local time) and proposed a total solution for the Canadian submarine introduction project. The Deep Blue Forum is an academic forum co-hosted by the Canadian Navy and Vanguard Canada, Canada’s leading defense and security media.

Canada is currently pursuing the ‘Canadian Patrol Submarine Project (CPSP)’ to introduce up to 12 3,000-ton submarines, and a contract is expected to be signed between 2026 and 2027.

HD Hyundai Heavy Industries introduced a total solution customized for Canada equipped with lithium-ion batteries at this forum held under the theme of ‘Preparing local support for new submarines for Canada.’ This solution includes a Canadian customized model (model name: KSS-III CA) that modified the design of the Korean Navy’s Dosan Ahn Chang-ho class (3,000 ton class) submarine in line with CPSP.

Terri Pavelic, Editor-in-Chief of Vanguard Canada, who co-hosted the Deep Blue Forum, said, “As CPSP is a large-scale business, it requires a partner who can carry out the project stably for a long period of time,” adding, “HD Hyundai Heavy Industries is very responsive to Canada’s needs.” “We believe it is a suitable company, and we look forward to the Korean government’s help in carrying out the project successfully.”

Wonho Joo, CEO of HD Hyundai Heavy Industries’ Special Ship Business, said, “HD Hyundai Heavy Industries has the best conditions to successfully carry out the Canadian submarine project based on its abundant experience and construction capabilities in timely delivery of numerous domestic and foreign vessels.” “We will work closely with the government and related industries to contribute to the continued growth of the industry and creation of national interests.”

Meanwhile, prior to this event, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries submitted a response to the ‘CPSP Information Request’ received from Public Services and Procurement Canada (PSPC) last September and officially announced its intention to participate in the bidding for the project.

The company also reported that it discussed cooperation plans with Canadian defense companies, such as Babcock Canada, focusing on maintaining and repairing local Canadian ships.
