The finalization of the national accounts for the second quarter of 2024 shows a slowdown in the growth of the national economy standing at 2.4% instead of 2.5% during the same quarter of 2023, indicates the High Commission for Planning ( HCP).
Driven by domestic demand, this growth was achieved in a context of controlled inflation and a financing need for the national economy representing 1.1% of GDP, notes the HCP in an information note on the national economic situation in the second quarter of 2024.
Non-agricultural activities recorded an increase of 3.2% and those of the agricultural sector a decrease of 4.5%, specifies the HCP.
At retail, the added value of the primary sector in volume, adjusted for seasonal variations, contracted by 5% in the second quarter of 2024, after having recorded an increase of 1.2% in the same quarter of the previous year.
For its part, the added value of the secondary sector increased by 3.8% instead of a decrease of 2.4% during the second quarter of the previous year.
This was the result of the improvement in the added values of the extraction industry by 23.6% instead of a drop of 9.6%, of construction and public works by 3.6% instead of a drop of 2.4%, processing industries of 2.9% instead of a drop of 1.6% and the drop of that of electricity and water of 6.3% instead of a increase of 0.8%.
Furthermore, the added value of the tertiary sector recorded a slowdown in its growth rate, going from 5% in the same period of the previous year to 3.1% in the second quarter of 2024.
It was marked by the slowdown in “Accommodation and catering” activities to 9.3% instead of 32.8%, “Transport and warehousing” to 5.1% instead of 6.9%, of “Research and development and services provided to businesses” at 3.8% instead of 4.4%, of “Education, health and social action services” at 2.7% instead of 4.8 %, “Real estate services” at 2% instead of 3.2%, “Financial services and insurance” at 0.9% instead of 3.1% and “Information and communication” at 0.5% at instead of 4.2%.
It was also marked by the increase in the activities of services provided by general public administration and social security of 3.6% instead of 3.3% and of trade and vehicle repair of 1.9% instead of 0. .9%.
As a result, the added value of the non-agricultural sector increased by 3.2% during the second quarter of 2024 instead of 2.5% a year earlier.
In this context, and taking into account the increase in taxes on products net of subsidies of 3%, the Gross Domestic Product showed an increase of 2.4% in volume, instead of 2.5% in the second quarter of the previous year.
At current prices, GDP increased by 3.6%, resulting in an increase in the general price level of 1.2% instead of 7.3% in the second quarter of the previous year.
