HC Kriens-Luzern loses the first playoff semi-final game

HC Kriens-Luzern lacked the last will to win in the attack

Kriens-Luzern loses the first playoff semi-final game in Schaffhausen with 22:25, but surprises with a comeback.

HCKL backcourt player Tomas Piroch (3rd from left) couldn’t get through.

It looked like he had never been away. He parried opposing throws, celebrated his actions intensely, pushed his teammates on and discussed with the referees. We are talking about goalkeeper Pascal Stauber, 116-time Swiss ex-international, two-time champion with Pfadi Winterthur – and actually resigned in 2015. Yesterday, however, the Basler made his comeback, at the age of 41, in the outfit of HC Kriens-Luzern.

Because regular goalkeeper Paul Bar ended the season after shoulder surgery and his substitute Kayoum Eicher should not shoulder the burden of responsibility between the posts alone, the Central Swiss decided to reactivate Stauber at short notice. “Pasci knows what he’s doing and he wasn’t fitter than he is now when he was active,” explains coach Goran Perkovac, who had Stauber under his wing as coach of Winterthur and Switzerland.

In the 19th minute, Stauber comes on the field

It was not foreseeable that he would soon be needed against the Kadetten Schaffhausen in game one of the playoff semifinals. Eicher started the game very unhappy, did not hold a single one of the first eight throws on his goal and had to vacate his post in the 19th minute. Not David Wenger, the goalkeeper of the Kriens 1st division, who was also in the squad, came on the field, but – Pascal Stauber. He could not stop the collapse of his team at first, due to a weak offensive performance and eleven minutes without a goal, Kriens-Luzern had to let the opponent pull away from a 6: 6 draw to a 12: 6 by the 25th minute. But then the hot spur caught fire and, with its defensive actions, was mainly responsible for the fact that the guests were still in the game at the break (13: 9). “He surprised everyone with this performance. But even more important are the positive emotions that Pasci brings to us, ”Perkovac stated.

After the break, Stauber continued his strong performance, really getting closer to the Schaffhausen team, but Kriens-Luzern was unable to do so for the time being. This was still due to the appearance in the attack, which made many mistakes that evening. There was no pull on goal, the will to go where it hurts, even the throwing power from the back area and the water displacement at the circle did not meet the high demands of a playoff semi-final. It was of little help that top scorer Hleb Harbuz had to be replaced after five minutes due to an injury. “The offensive was not enough, but more would have been needed,” said Perkovac grumbling.

Despite many mistakes close to Schaffhausen

The Schaffhausen team didn’t play at the highest level either, and when they allowed three counter attacks in a row about ten minutes before the end, the Lucerne team reduced the score from 21:16 to 21:19. The two teams fought an exciting duel at eye level, similar to the cup final 18 days ago. By the 57th minute, Kriens-Luzern even shortened to 23:22, but in the end the cadets prevailed thanks to the greater routine of their builders. “Schaffhausen is not better”, Perkovac is convinced, a victory in game two on Saturday in Kriens is possible.

Perhaps then defense chief Aljaz Lavric, who was back on the bench yesterday after breaking his nose, will return to the field. And then there is still the new, old trump card in goal, which ensures confidence – Pascal Stauber.
