Patty Jenkins is by no means satisfied with the decision of Warner Bros. to Wonder Woman 1984 simultaneously in cinemas and on streaming service HBO Max.The film was originally scheduled to hit theaters in June 2020, but like so many other productions, it was severely delayed due to the coronavirus. After two delayed releases, the film finally came out in the Christmas season of 2020.
Hybride release
Wonder Woman 1984 was released simultaneously in theaters and on streaming service HBO Max. Given the number of closed cinemas, the film had a reasonable opening weekend with $16.7 million in the United States. It was even the best opening for a movie during the pandemic at the time.
However, the simultaneous release of the film on HBO Max took its toll on the box office. The cinema gross amounted to $ 46 million in the United States and $ 166 million in foreign cinemas. A major setback for Jenkins, who turns out to be an outspoken opponent of hybrid releases:
“It was the best pick of a bunch of bad choices at the time, but a heartbreaking experience. It was bad for the movie. I don’t think the experience is the same on streaming. Never not. I’m not a fan of hybrid releases and hope always be able to avoid them.”
