Hayao Miyazaki’s “The Boy and the Heron” to open the 48th Toronto International Film Festival

NEW YORK

“Kimitachi wa dô ikiru ka” (“The Boy and the Heron” in its English title), the first film in a decade from Japanese anime master Hayao Miyazaki, will open the 48th Toronto International Film Festival, announced the organizers on Thursday.

The long-awaited film opened earlier this month in Japan. The 82-year-old Miyazaki, co-founder of Studio Ghibli and creator of movies like “Spirited Away” and “My Neighbor Totoro,” came out of retirement to make his 12th feature film.

“Kimitachi wa dô ikiru ka,” which translates to how do you live?, is about a boy named Mahito whose mother is killed in World War II bombing raids on Tokyo. It was released in Japan without trailers or promotion to make the film more of a discovery, Miyazaki said.

But it’ll have a big platform for its North American premiere when it kicks off on TIFF on September 7 at Roy Thomson Hall.

“We are honored to open the 48th Toronto International Film Festival with the work of one of cinema’s greatest artists,” Cameron Bailey, CEO of TIFF, said in a statement. “Already hailed as a masterpiece in Japan, Hayao Miyazaki’s new film begins as a simple story of loss and love and rises to a staggering work of imagination. I hope our audience discovers its mysteries for themselves, but I can promise a singular and transformative experience.”

The film’s release date has not yet been announced, but GKIDS will distribute it later this year in theaters across the United States and Canada. The Toronto International Film Festival takes place from September 7 to 17.
