A stream in the Waipio Valley on Hawaii’s Big Island is attracting attention.
– The water from this storm drain in Waipio sometimes gives off an overwhelming smell of fruit punch – other times it stinks of alcohol, says Hawaii News Nowreporter Rick Daysog in a TV feature.
– Contained alcohol
It was environmental activist Carroll Cox from Envirowatch Inc. who first noticed that something was not quite right with the water.
– The other day when we came here, it smelled like a pub that had not opened its doors in three or four days, she says to the local news channel.
Made horror finds in brain
The news channel undertook to test the water at an independent laboratory, and the results that came back were startling:
– They found that the water contained as much as 1.2 percent alcohol. It also contained 0.4 percent sugar, Hawaii News Now reports.
– Can come from us
A kind of leak was therefore suspected at “Paradise Beverages”, which is the state’s largest distributor of spirits and other alcoholic beverages.
But they say they do not know what may have caused the leak.
