Hawaii records 116 new coronavirus infections, bringing state total to 25,771

Hawaii Department of Health officials today reported 116 new coronavirus infections, bringing the state’s total since the start of the pandemic to 25,771 cases.

No new deaths were reported today and the state’s coronavirus death toll remains at 407.

The state’s official coronavirus death toll includes 325 deaths in Oahu, 53 on the island of Hawaii, 25 in Maui, one in Kauai and three Hawaii residents who died on the mainland.

The coronavirus-related death toll in the United States was over 437,600 today.

The statewide new cases of infection reported by the Department of Health today include 82 in Oahu, 20 in Maui, eight on the Big Island and six residents diagnosed outside of Hawaii, said responsible. As a result of updated information, one case from Kauai was reclassified to Maui, and one case from the island of Hawaii was removed from the accounts.

Statistics released today reflect the new cases of infection reported to the department on Thursday.

The total number of coronavirus cases per island since the start of the epidemic is 20,864 in Oahu, 2,151 in Hawaii County, 1,726 in Maui, 178 in Kauai, 107 in Lanai and 25 in Molokai. There are also 720 Hawaii residents diagnosed out of state.

Health officials also said today that of the state’s total infections, 1,456 cases are considered active. Officials say they regard infections reported in the past 14 days as a “surrogate number for active cases.” The number of active cases in the state has fallen by 45 today.

Per island, Oahu has 1,066 active cases, Maui has 297, the Big Island has 86, Kauai has six and Lanai has one, according to the state’s latest tally. Molokai does not have any active COVID cases.

Health officials counted 9,472 new COVID-19 test results in today’s tally, for a statewide positivity rate of 1.22%. The state’s 7-day average positivity rate is 2.3%, according to the Hawaii COVID-19 Data dashboard.

Of all confirmed cases of infection in Hawaii, 1,694 required hospitalizations, with 11 new hospitalizations reported today by state health officials.

Four statewide hospitalizations are residents of Hawaii who were diagnosed and treated out of state. Of the 1,690 hospitalizations in the state, 1,482 were in Oahu, 99 in Maui, 96 in Big Island, 7 in Kauai, 5 in Lanai and 1 in Molokai.

According to the latest information from the department’s Hawaii COVID-19 Data dashboard, a total of 75 patients infected with the virus were in hospitals in Hawaii as of Friday morning, including 20 in intensive care units and 15 on ventilators.

Health officials said as of Jan. 24, 106,654 vaccines had been administered out of the 170,975 received by the state. Vaccinations administered by county are Honolulu, 68,521; Maui, 11,060; Hawaii, 10,459 and Kauai, 8,799. The total also included several thousand administered under the federal pharmacy program. State officials release updated vaccination numbers verified every Wednesday.

Oahu moved to the less restrictive Level 2 of Honolulu’s four-tier economic stimulus package on October 22. . To move to level 3 of level 2, the 7-day average of new cases must be less than 50 on two consecutive Wednesdays. In addition, the average 7-day positivity rate must be less than 2.5% on these two Wednesdays.

Today, the seven-day average number of cases for Oahu is 77 and the seven-day average positivity rate is 2.7%, according to Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi.

Blangiardi said he hoped to stay at Level 2, a four-level framework established by former mayor Kirk Caldwell. Under level 3, social gatherings of up to 10 would be allowed, up from 5 under level 2, and retail businesses would be able to operate at full capacity, instead of 50% of their capacity below level 2.
