What benefits do the health insurance funds offer to young women?

• Are you a woman aged 25 or younger?
• Do you receive an increased allowance as a woman?
• Or are you staying in an institute?
• Is the contraceptive you want to take included in the government’s list of reimbursed products?
• And was it prescribed by a doctor?

In that case, the health insurance fund has been making an additional contribution to the purchase price for several years now. Exactly how much, that differs from product to product, but it corresponds to a maximum of 3 euros per month. Various contraceptives, such as the pill and the IUD, are therefore free for women up to the age of 25.

In addition, regardless of your age, you often pay nothing at all for the morning-after pill. You have to buy all those contraceptives at the pharmacy. For implantable contraceptives, everything goes through the hospital pharmacy.

Usually, the allowance is immediately deducted from the purchase price. You then only pay the co-payment. Did you buy non-prescription contraceptives other than the morning-after pill? Then you first pay the full price, but you can ask for a certificate in the pharmacy, with which you obtain a refund from the health insurance fund.

What additional benefits do the various health insurance funds still offer?

With the above arrangement you may have to pay very little or nothing for contraceptives. But the mutual insurance companies push the price even further with extra refunds for men and women, even if you are over 25 years old.

At the Liberal Mutualities you will be reimbursed up to 30 euros per year for the purchase through a pharmacy of contraceptive pills, contraceptive patches, the vaginal ring, the IUD, implant pills, the morning-after pill, condoms and a vasectomy.

Also at it Neutral Ziekenfonds Vlaanderen and the Flemish & Neutral Health Insurance Fund can you get a refund for contraceptives, if you take out the MaxiPlan, extra insurance. Then you enjoy an extra reimbursement of up to a maximum of 25 euros per year for contraceptives.

Bee solidarity you will then be reimbursed a maximum of 45 euros per calendar year for contraceptives, regardless of your age: 15 euros per year for the pill, vaginal ring, injection or patch; 45 euros every three years for an IUD; 45 euros every 2 years and 9 months for an implant and 45 euros once for a sterilization. Solidaris also pays back a maximum of 15 euros per calendar year on condoms, and a one-off payment of 45 euros for a vasectomy or sterilisation.

Solidarity Brabant finally pays back 40 euros per year for female contraceptives, regardless of your age: 10 euros per trimester for the (injection) pill, vaginal ring and patch; 10 euros per unit for the monitor-after pill, and 120 euros per three-year period for the IUD and the contraceptive implant.
