Have you not shopped for Easter? Then you should be aware of this

It is only days before Easter sets in full and the grocery stores close their doors. Have you shopped for Easter and missed an ingredient for Easter dinner? Here is the explanation.

Bama buys a lot of iceberg and heart salad from Spain.

– It has been very demanding weather conditions in Spain, says Pia Gulbrandsen, director of communication and public relations in Bama to TV 2.

The bad weather conditions in Spain have had consequences for the delivery of iceberg and heart salad to Norway.

– It has rained for 3 weeks in a row, which makes the harvest very demanding. And it unfortunately appears on store shelves, says Gulbrandsen.

Communications manager Harald Kristiansen in the grocery chain Coop tells TV 2 that they have experienced challenges in getting salad. At the same time, he explains that there are several reasons for the empty store shelves.

– First, dust from the Sahara desert ruined the quality of the head salads. Then came heavy rain, which has been going on for over three weeks, Kristiansen explains.

Depending on the weather

The products grow in the open air and the farmers are therefore dependent on the weather.

– We have encouraged the stores to accept more crispy salad, which is a Norwegian greenhouse product, which we have supplemented during the period, says Gulbrandsen in Bama.

Kristiansen says that they are trying to get more salad, but says that it is a big challenge now.

– It is almost impossible since only Spain has these salads right now, he says.

The grocery chain Rema 1000 and NorgesGruppen confirm to TV 2 that they too have been hit by the challenges with the delivery.

– We expect it to be short-lived and sell crispy salad as an alternative if it is not available, says Hanne Knudsen, head of communication at Rema 1000.

NorgesGruppen’s head of communications, Kine Søyland, says that they expect that the iceberg lettuce will soon be back on store shelves.

– We have challenges with iceberg lettuce due to bad weather in Spain. However, it seems to be temporary, says Søyland.

Have faith in improvement

Gulbrandsen does not believe, however, that the store shelves will be left empty for very long.

– According to the weather forecast, some rain has been forecast for the time to come, but then there will be a stay, so we cross our fingers for that, Gulbrandsen says.

– When can we expect to get it back on store shelves?

– Now it looks like there will be stays and warmer in the time ahead. So then there will be better access to salad in a short time.
