A very interesting, but unfortunately “unborn” project of AZLK again attracted the attention of the public. The Moskvich Istra concept car was exhibited at the Museum of Transport and for which the Automotive Russia channel on YouTube prepared a concise video report. The car is extremely interesting – perhaps this is one of the most remarkable concepts of the Moscow Automobile Plant.
Not so long ago, 2000 looked like a pretty distant future, in which everything would be different and much better. Many engineering projects from the 1980s and early 1990s focused on the year 2000.
The AZLK-2144 began to be developed in 1985. At that time, it was assumed that all the solutions included in the concept would be able to be applied to a production car at the end of the millennium.
So, let’s list the innovations that amaze this Moskvich: turbodiesel engine working in conjunction with a variable gearbox, start / stop button, four-wheel drive, air suspension, satellite navigation, digital dashboard, head up display with projection directly on the windshield glass …
Now, in 2021, many of these technologies are standard for new cars, but, alas, the new Moskvich – the project AZLK -2144, also known as Moskvich Istra, does not exist. The project was closed with the collapse of the USSR, and then, as is well known, the plant ceased to exist.
