Have We Decided to Bequeath a Warmer, More Hostile, and Unstable World to Our Children?

François Normand, in special collaboration with Lesaffaires

Forest fires, extreme heat waves, torrential rains… Climate change is accelerating before our eyes in the four corners of the planet. However, our collective efforts are far from being equal to the ecological crisis that threatens us. Have we already decided to throw in the towel and bequeath a warmer, more hostile and unstable world to our children?

The question arises in the face of the lack of ambition of governments, businesses and individuals to reduce their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

However, we know how to take difficult and effective actions in certain economic situations.

When it comes time to save a company on the verge of bankruptcy, we know what to do quickly: massively slash expenses and sell assets, while trying to generate new revenue.

But it hurts.

It’s the same thing to tackle the deficit budget of a government in the red and over-indebted: we must reduce services, while taxing businesses and the better off more.

It hurts even more.

The same goes for combating inflation which is eating away at the purchasing power and savings of individuals: to slow down the economy, central banks must increase interest rates, which causes borrowing costs for businesses and corporations to jump. individuals, including their mortgage.

This is downright painful.

Let us now return to the climate, but taking elements from these three economic examples.
