Residents in Havana were left without the service of state-run taxis called Gazelle since last Wednesday, March 27, due to the fuel shortage that has been experienced on the Island for months.
This was confirmed by the Government of the capital through a statement shared on social networks, where they indicated that Metrotaxi vehicles were having difficulties resupplying themselves with gasoline.
“During the last 48 hours, there have been difficulties with supply at the points intended for Metrotaxi vehicles, which is why it has not been possible to cover the routes on the established itineraries,” the post reads.
The note indicates that the taxi drivers were going to travel some of the established routes with what was left in the vehicles’ tanks. Likewise, they apologized for any inconvenience this may have, as they are aware of the importance of this service in the capital.
“We are aware of how important this service is for the mobility of the population in the Cuban capital, so we apologize to our customers for this situation and inform that the service will soon be restored and operate normally,” the statement concludes. .
According to official figures shared by the Minister of Transportation, Eduardo Rodríguez Dávila, a survey indicated that 78% of those interviewed used the transportation services of Gazelles vehicles.
However, the Gacelas, as they are popularly known, do not provide service after 9:00 pm, which is when they are given the freedom to go off their routes and charge higher prices. This situation has generated discontent, something that users let the minister know on their social networks.
“Many times drivers make inventions to cover requests unrelated to their service during the route schedule (…) Payment for their services at those times becomes abusive and prohibitive for the vast majority of Cubans,” indicated one of the drivers. users.
“Go out at 8 at night to take a Gazelle, so you can see what they are going to charge you, because they are rented free taxis at night. “I don’t understand how a vehicle that was bought with the people’s money can be rented to someone so that they can charge whatever they want at night,” added another.
