A man in his thirties was tried on Tuesday, February 9, 2021, for the theft of packages from mailboxes in Suresnes (Hauts-de-Seine), in May 2020. It was not the first time that he acted as such.
The judicial tribunal of Nanterre condemned him to six months in prison with 18 months suspended, with obligation of work or training: “The opportunity to do something other than hanging out in the premises of letter boxes”, blows the president of the court.
The police alerted by the video surveillance of the building
The individual was filmed by the building’s surveillance camera, “in permanent contact with a security team” who notified the police. The police intervened when the man had opened a Colissimo, as well as a postal envelope, present in a letterbox.
The facts date back to May 7, 2020. On that day, the young man from St Denis is, with another individual – who is not present at the hearing before the judicial tribunal of Nanterre -, in the lobby of a building in Suresnes.
A dozen master keys in the pocket
They are waiting for someone and decide to open the mailboxes using a master key that the defendant had “bought at Clignancourt to open my mailbox”, he testifies. When the judge points out to the defendant that many master keys were seized by the police, “eleven, I believe” on him, he explained: “I have a battery because the first one did not fit”.
Faced with the perplexity of the court, the defendant admits: “I have already done this before, it was not the first time”. Indeed, he has already been condemned for these facts by the court of Bobigny, in 2014.
“I did something stupid, I shouldn’t have”
The 29-year-old apologizes with half words. I adds: “I knew there would be nothing, that it was not worth it, I should not have”. However, these words do not seem to convince the court: “These are quite serious things, and you have already been condemned for that, but you did not move on, it shows”, announces the magistrate.
His professional project appears relatively vague: he has many excuses for having aborted his training. One was “too military, I don’t really like having the ball to zero”, he blurted out without complex before the judges. When he was able to work in the building, “it was too dangerous, there are sometimes deaths on the sites”.
He claims to start a gemology training next month. “It’s the study of precious stones, I’m going to take gold and sell it, but legally,” he says. He asks for leniency from the court, and especially “that it is not written in my criminal record”.
6 months suspended sentence
The public prosecutor regrets this situation: “It is quite unpleasant, because there is a preparation, with the purchase of the bunch of keys, and the fact that it is not the first time”. It requires eight months in prison, suspended sentence with community service.
“I agree with community service, I already do volunteer work, and that would make it possible for me to do some for society.” The court then pronounces a sentence of six months in prison with a probationary suspension of 18 months, community service as well as an obligation of care or training.
