“Red alert” for retail and catering
The initiative “Life belongs in the center” represents a group of dealers who stand for hundreds of thousands of jobs in Germany. In addition to local “top dogs”, it includes nationally known names such as Breuninger, Deichmann, Ernsting’s Family, Kik and Thalia. These companies have a turnover of around 20 billion euros, 180,000 directly employed employees and approx. 600,000 indirectly employed. These figures make the economic relevance clear. At the same time, these companies are visitor magnets and are of considerable relevance for our inner cities and social life.
In addition, Sabine Kuch, owner of Haus der Braut & Gentleman, Mönchengladbach, est. 1968: “I can only speak for myself, customers come to us from up to 100km away in Mönchengladbach, as we are one of the ten best specialist shops in North Rhine-Westphalia. And after shopping with me? Then where should the customers go to have a coffee or take a stroll? If this infrastructure is missing, then even fewer people come to Mönchengladbach. We now need clear cornerstones for an opening strategy. “
In order to draw attention to the #lebenimzentrum initiative, retailer Sabine Kuch has hung posters in the shop window, here two red lamps light up around the clock as a sign of solidarity for the restaurateurs and retailers who are about to “OFF”.
Kuch adds: “I trust my customers that they will wait for us to open and that they will not buy their festive clothes for communion, small or large weddings or graduation celebrations online, but in an individual specialist shop. We can offer a safe space by making appointments, requiring a mask and a ventilation concept. “
