As reported by the Daily Star, a type of shark known as the Spiny Dogfish or Spurdog lives in the River Thames.

Citing the My London report, this shark is named after the spines in front of its fins, which are used for self-defense and to attack predators.

“It has a sharp snout, large, grayish-brown eyes on top with a smaller belly and rows of white spots on the sides,” the report explains.

The Spurdog Shark is a species of venomous fish found in British waters, along with Stingrays and Weevers.

This shark species is believed to use the River Thames as a breeding ground in shallow bays and estuaries.

Although the Spurdog shark does not eat humans, its venom can cause extreme discomfort and swelling, in addition to attacking if disturbed.

Last year, The Zoological Society of London (ZSL) through its report identified two other shark species in the River Thames.

The two shark species are known as the Tope and the Starry Smoothhound.
