Has palm oil production grown in the country, how much was the increase?

In November, the production of crude palm oil in Colombia was 133,000 tons and so far this year it has reached 1.63 million tons.which represents an increase of 1.1% compared to 1.62 million tons in the same period of the previous year.

For its part, production in the last twelve months has recorded an increase of 3.3%. This increase, among other things, is the result of the good productivity recorded both in the fruit and in the oil, in particular of OXG hybrid material (a controlled cross between American palms from Cereté, Colombia, with African palms), better fertilization practices once oil prices started to improve in 2020, and more and better distribution of rainfall in different palm growing regions. from the country.

In fact, so far in 2022, total palm oil sales have risen to 1.65 million tonnes, an increase of 4.2% over the same period in 2021.

By disaggregating sales by target marketthe local market bought 1.20 million tons with a growth of 7.2%, the rest went to exports. The high share of domestic sales is explained by high international prices for soybean oil and other vegetable oils, which make palm oil competitive and in high demand in segments such as food.

Similarly, the increase in demand for biodiesel, which between January and October 2022 increased by 8.4% compared to the same period in 2021, is another driving factor of the domestic market.
